Foundations of Human Development in the Social Environment Essay
Human behaviors can be intriguing and somewhat confusing. Human development is assessed through many factors and throughout this paper I will be discussing the interactions between the bio-psycho-social dimensions of development, the concept of human diversity and cultural competence and also explain the connection between general systems theory and social order. To understand the human thinking and behavior, the professional must grasp an understanding of the three elements I listed above. To begin to gain insight into the human behavior one may begin with the biological, psychological, and social developments of oneââ¬â¢s life. These aspects of development are also referred to the bio-psycho-social. Biological concerns the physical aspect of a personââ¬â¢s life, psychological emphasize an individualââ¬â¢s thought process and the social development addresses the personââ¬â¢s interaction with those around them and in their environment. People are very complex and these three various aspects work together, shaping the person as a whole. When one of these dimensions is affected, for example if a person gets depressed this affects the psychological area; however their social interactions are also affected when the person stays in bed, this can lead to biological if the individual stops eating. The bio-psycho-social begins at infancy and continues to develop along oneââ¬â¢s life span. There are normal developmental milestones which are significant in individualsââ¬â¢ lives; these are motor development, personality development, motivation, social development, and learning. There are certain developments that occur at age-appropriate times, which can help a professional define the word ââ¬Å"normal.â⬠An example, consider a babyââ¬â¢s motor development; by the age three or four they can dress and undress themselves. That is considered ââ¬Å"the norm.â⬠The normal development milestones offer a basic line for assessing human behavior, this way the social workers can distinguish between situations that merit interventions and those who do not. As a social worker it is significant to understand the human behavior and several concepts contribute to the understanding. Human diversity, which is the range of differences among groups, which include but are not limited to; age, race, disability, gender, ethnicity, sex, and sexual orientation. Then there is cultural competence, which is the master of a certain knowledge, skill, policy, and program. It is vital for the social worker to understand cultural beliefs, values, and practices of their clients. Human diversity is culture, it is the shared attitudes, goals, spiritual beliefs and social expectations that characterize a broader society in which people live. In todayââ¬â¢s world there is a long way to go to gain cultural competence. Fortunately, social workers are adding cultural competence to their already existing strengths and values, making them well-appointed professionals to deliver the appropriate care to the people. The National Association of Social Workers recently developed a standard, requiring the worker to strive to deliver culturally competent services to their ever more diverse case loads. By the social worker becoming culturally competent, they are better able to address the person with diverse needs, such as the disabled, older adults, and those who are transgender or gay. It is a task for the social worker to find balance between the psychological aspects and the social environment, but it has been done; by the use of the general systems theories and social order. The connections between these two bring an understanding to human behaviors, the functioning, and the thinking of humans. General systems theory is that of wholeness, the system can be a family, a community or an organization. There are many concepts in the system theories; some of them are the system, boundaries, subsystems, relationship, input/output, feedback and differentiation. The general systems theory takes all that make that system and puts it together, ââ¬Å"wholeness.â⬠Social order describes the norm within society. By using these two concepts together the social worker can understand better their clients, their families, and their communities. All of which make the client who the client is. Human behavior in our society accumulates many factors as I stated throughout this paper. Many different concepts are needed to help the professional understand the behaviors of their clients. By taking into consideration the bio-psycho-social dimensions, looking at the general systems theory and gaining insight into human diversity and cultural competence, the social workers are better able to help the client succeed and become a productive member of society. Understanding human development and the social environment is the professionalââ¬â¢s responsibility, to become culturally competent to handle all diversity that may cross their path and to respectfully gain knowledge of the client through their own biological, psychological, and sociological elements of what makes them; them.

Due to the Mound builders location they had to face many environmental challenges, first the Appalachian Mountain affected the amount of contact they had with other civilizations and made trade hard because they would have to travel over the mountains. The Great Plains provided great land for the Mound builders to plant and cultivates the civilizations agricultural produce such as the following: Sunflowers, goose foot, erect knot wood, and May grass. The Mound builder civilization has many rivers that ran through its boundaries including the following Rivers: the St. Lawrence, Mississippi and Ohio rivers (Kavasch). The Rivers provided water that helped sustain the civilization, and its agricultural produce. The Mound Builders Civilization can be described in terms of movement. Trade existed between leaders of Mound Builder clans and other territories. They made pottery which they traded with other civilizations; they also collected and traded shellfish that was used in jewelry. The territories from the Southeast were provided with the following items: Mica, Quartz of Crystals, and Chlorite from the Carolinas. The Mound Builder clans from the Southeast were provided with the following items: Galena from Missouri, Flint from Illinois, Grizzly bear teeth, Obsidian, and Chalcedony from the Rocky Mountain, and Cooper which was found in the Great Lakes (ââ¬Å"The Woodland Periodâ⬠). Dangerous Stunts Seen On Youtube English Language Essay David Nuno became the latest teenager to die in a freak accident this week trying to duplicate a stunt he saw on YouTube called the good kids high. Nuno, 15, and his two friends were watching a YouTube video of how to pass out on purpose before trying it out on Tuesday, Chula Vista Police Capt. Gary Wedge said. Just like in the video, Nuno was standing before he lost consciousness. When he fell forward, he crashed onto an empty drinking glass and broke it with his collarbone, allowing the shard to slice through his interior and exterior jugular arteries. His friends didnt see the blood until they rolled him over, prompting one to race down the stairs to find Nunos father, Wedge said. As Nuno regained consciousness, he realized he was bleeding and ran down the stairs just as his father was running up to help him. As his father applied pressure to the wound with a towel, Nuno collapsed on the floor. Emergency responders arrived and tried to stop the bleeding, but Nunos pulse disappeared. They performed CPR, but he died shortly after he got to the hospital, Wedge said. Anytime a teen dies, its tragic, Wedge said, adding that hed never seen anyone try to asphyxiate himself to get high before Tuesday, but hes learned its much more common than people realize. Nunos death isnt the first like it not even the first this month. Aà 12-year-oldà suffocated to death in Wisconsin trying to achieve a pass-out high last Thursday. The Dangerous Behaviors Foundation asked victims parents to report choking game deaths and recordedà 416 fatalitiesà as of last September. Emergency rooms are seeing more and more teens with injuries that result from emulating things they see on YouTube videos that include the choking game, and other more innocuous sounding but deadly games such as thecinnamon challenge, theà salt-and-ice challenge, chubby bunnyà and even extreme fighting. Dr. Thomas Abramo, the chief of pediatric emergency medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, said he sees all of it in his ER. Although teens have acted on risky behavior fads throughout his 30-year career, he said hes seeing trends catch on faster than ever before, and he thinks its because of YouTube and social media. If you get one kid doing it, you tend to see more kids doing it, said Abramo, who said two of his patients have died playing the choking game. The spread of the event is definitely faster. One challenge that scares Abramo involves being hit on the head with a bench or a folding chair to see if you can take it, he said. A lot of the time, they cant. Fractures, concussions, lacerations, Abramo said. Just the things you would think would happen. Once you see some of these videos, you go, Oh my God,' the doctor said. The Darwin award videos, which involve varying dangerous challenges, are the worst hes seen. Survival of the stupidest. I cant believe it happens. It defies logic, Abramo said. These kids were beating each other to a pulp, and kids were standing around and cheering until somebody gave up. Hilfer, who has worked as a child psychologist for four decades, said videos also validate anorexia and cutting by making them seem normal. However, Dr. Carol Bernstein, a psychiatry professor at New York Universitys Langone Medical Center, said she doesnt think YouTube alone is to blame for teens engaging in challenges that could seriously injure them because many factors are involved. She said other environmental factors, physiology, and temperament contribute to a childs decision to emulate a video. Stress here should be on knowing our children, watching behaviors and having conversations with them, Bernstein said. Theres no substitute for parents and teachers who are engaging with their kids in general. Another big part that takes place in these games is the imagination kids have now a days to entertain themselves. Sometime technology takes a big part of students lives. Most of the population has been boys. Teens have to realize that these games arent games to be played because they come with one consequence and that is death. In this occasion I believe since there isnt much to do any more about these kids to stop playing these games the best way to handle the situation is to create an organization in where students and teens all around the world can pledge to not playing these games because they are dangerous. Its the same concept used in how ATT is using the schools and people to pledge to not driving and texting. Opinions by the public have been made that our society isnt thinking correctly and day by day they just go ahead and sacrifice their life for something that isnt worth trying. The public blames this situation in many different ways. First they blame the person for doing the stunt because either they are not realizing what they are doing or are just too dumb to notice. As well they are blaming the parents because they are not taking too much responsibility to what their children do and act, and lastly the public blames the media because these stories keep on coming up and it never dies down. It just gives a more of an opportunity for the people to hear about the situation and continue it. I cant disagree with none of these statements because all of them come into play in this story and article. Everyone has a fault in the situations that the teens face today and for this reason I believe that media, parents, and children should all sit down and realize that they have some fault in wha t has happened. They should all as well help out and find a way where everyone can help out and fix the situation. Media for once should only display what is correct to display and the negativity on deaths and stunts like these should be kept to a minimum on who should find out about these situations. Dragon Slayer The musty odor lingered across his nose. "This was it, this was the cave" he whispered under his breath. He knew this would be a challenge. The entrance of the cave was scattered with the bones of many who dared entered. He knew he had to do this even if this was the last thing he ever did. The young knight entered the musty cave with all the silence of a stalking leopard. The cave was a gloomy sight, even in the interior of the cave there were bones of many past knights. This was no ordinary dragon. This dragon had killed more then most and had experience in fighting. He was the most sought after dragon in the world. He has stolen more gold from castles and killed more royal families than any other dragon. This is why the young knight was here, his king sent him on this mission because of his daughter's kidnapping. The dragon snatched her off the castle balcony and took her to this cave. The knight worked his way through the many winding turns of the cave. He knew this could either change his life or end it. The knight knew he had to stay silent and stay in the shadows. If the dragon would hear him it would be all over. The knight could sense the change in the smell as he went deeper into the cave. The smell was at first a musty old smell, the smell that most caves had, but this was different it was as if a rotten carcass had been setting in a warm room for weeks. He knew this smell; it was the smell of a dragon. He was near, so near he could feel the warmth of the dragon's body coming up the tunnel. Then without the slightest clue of danger a ball of flame shot straight by him, so close he could feel the hairs on his face singe with the passing ball of flame. He knew this was a time for action. He ran as fast as he could towards the route the flames had come from. No more than 50 yards of running took him into the dragon's lair. The lair was an awesome sight. There were more riches than any kingdom could imagine in a thousand years. The lair had the knight so awe struck that he had forgotten why he was there.

The Use of Metaphor and Imagery in Galway Kinnell's Poem, Blackberry Eating Written in 1980, Galway Kinnell's Blackberry Eating is a poem which creates a strong metaphoric relationship between the tangible objects of blackberries, and the intangible objects of words. The speaker of the poem feels a strong attraction to the sensory characteristics (the touch, taste, and look) of blackberries. The attraction he feels at the beginning of the poem exclusively for blackberries is paralleled in the end by his appetite and attraction to words. The rush the speaker gets out of blackberry eating is paralleled to the enjoyment he finds in thinking about certain words; words which call up the same sensory images the blackberries embody. Throughout the fourteen lines of the poem, the imagery of the blackberries, as well as the speaker's ardor for them is explored. In the final lines of the poem, the speaker reveals the connection between the imagery of the blackberries and the imagery that is created by words. The blackberries become the existing tangible reality of the way the speaker views words. The author savors the taste of the blackberries in his mouth in much the same way as he savors the sound of certain words on his tongue. In the first line of the poem the speaker states his fondness for going out to eat blackberries. "I love to go out in late September..." This line makes it clear that the speaker goes out voluntarily because of his desire to eat the blackberries. In the next line, the speaker describes the blackberries in vivid imagery. "among the fat, overripe, icy, black blackberries. This description of the blackberries does not leave the reader to wonder about how the blackberries look or taste. The re... ...he metaphor he has created between the two objects. This allusion is further strengthened in the last line of the poem when the writer says "of blackberry eating in late September." The ending of the poem now echoes the beginning. The poem has come full-circle and the correlation between the sensory experience of blackberry eating and the auditory pleasure of words has been made. Blackberry Eating is metaphorical poem about the similarities between the pleasurable experience of picking and eating tasty blackberries and the auditory enjoyment of hearing the sound of certain words. Both the blackberries and the "words" provide a pleasurable sensory experience that the speaker collapses together and relates to in the same manner. Blackberry eating becomes a tangible experience that is used to depict the way the speaker intuitively reacts to certain words.

Laing British psychiatrist. R. D. Laing obviously backs up William Goldingââ¬â¢s point of view that human nature is evil. Human nature is directly affected by the environment; and is constantly changing due to the experiences of the individual. Oscar Wilde once said ââ¬Å"The only thing that one really knows about human nature is that it changes. Change is the one quality we can predicate from it. The systems that fail are those who rely on the permanency of human nature, and not on its growth and development. The error of Louis XIV was that he thought human nature would always be the same. The result of his error was the French Revolution. It was an admirable result. â⬠Human nature depends upon the environment in which they are immersed. The idea that children, not humans in general, are swayed by the ideas and actions of their parental figures is also a central idea of the book, ââ¬Å"The Lord of the Fliesâ⬠by William Golding. Because of the war in England where the boys were from their human experience was one of war. If there was no war going on in England at the time they were evacuated from England, there wouldââ¬â¢ve been no deaths, no Lord of the Flies, and certainly no beast. Because if they had came with a good human nature then how would there have been a beast which Golding classified as the basic evil inside all of us. Another thing that ties in with this that children try to copy what they see adults do so if a child sees an adult smoke up or drink then he may believe that it is okay or it is right because their parents do it. As George Orwell once said ââ¬Å"Part of the reason for the ugliness of adults, in a childââ¬â¢s eyes, is that the child is usually looking upwards, and the adults are rarely looking down. Yet no matter what they will always adore, look up to and love their parents. â⬠But as was just said sometimes that can be a bad thing. So what must we do? Well for starters why not try to teach our children better and try at all costs to set good examples for our children so that our society will hopefully be salvaged from the god forsaken wrath of evil. Children whoââ¬â¢s parents smoke have a 40% higher chance of smoking than children whoââ¬â¢s parents donââ¬â¢t smoke. 1 Chances are it is a mix of two things, first the fact that they think that it is okay for them to do it since their parents do it, the second is because of the nicotine addiction could be passed on from adults to their offspring. Now of course there are exceptions to the thesis like kids who smoke because their parents donââ¬â¢t, but that is usually a small percentile of the population. Most children will not do it as a rebellious act just because they see their parents doing it so therefor it is okay. Now as was stated briefly previously kids will a lot of the time do what their parents do because they look up to them so why wouldnââ¬â¢t they copy what the adults are doing. So why canââ¬â¢t we just stop altogether because we have a lazy society who rejects change so this may take a lot longer than would be hoped for. ââ¬Å"The only thing that one really knows about human nature is that it changes. Then when they felt the boring and unpleasant side of work and rules they changed their human nature to that of a slacker or a person who doesnââ¬â¢t follow societyââ¬â¢s rules and doesnââ¬â¢t attempt to strive for excellence. Also after voting Ralph the president, people still later agreed and followed Jack. So basically al that can be gathered by this information is that never rely on human nature to remain the same. In conclusion, although it may no work due to the constant changing of human nature, we must try not to set bad examples for younger ones who look up to us, and also try to give our children the best life we can provide for them and teach them right from wrong and teach them the right morals. Basically, we should just try to do the best parenting job we can do and hope the information and things you taught him or her will help them through life.

Hamilton saw much to admire in Britain, and when Britain was so burdened with debt that it seemed on the verge of bankruptcy, his reforms restored his countryââ¬â¢s financial health. The success of Hamiltonââ¬â¢s financial program, moreover, depended on smooth relations with Britain: duties on imports provided a major source of federal evenue, and most American imports came from Britain. Hamilton did not believe in returning the Americans to British rule; he had, after all, fought for independence as an officer of the Continental army. Nor did he seek to establish a monarchy in the United States. But he thought a friendly relationship with the onetime mother country would best serve American interests. In contrast, Jefferson remained deeply hostile to Britain, and his Anglophobia played a central role in his growing opposition to Hamilton. The treasury secretaryââ¬â¢s method of finance, with a bank and large funded debt, seemed, as in art it was, based on a British model, one that to Jefferson was dangerous because it allowed abundant opportunity for corruption. For ex ample, Jefferson stated, ââ¬Å"The incorporation of a bank, and the powers assumed by this bill, have not, in my opinion, been delegated to the United States, by the Constitution. â⬠(Document C). Jefferson was also deeply loyal to France, the Americansââ¬â¢ old ally in the War for Independence. While serving as minister to France during the 1780ââ¬â¢s, Jefferson had witnessed the beginnings of the French Revolution, which in his opinion only tightened the bond between France nd America, whose Revolution, he thought, had inspired the French. These differences widened as issues in foreign policy came to dominate Washingtonââ¬â¢s administration, and they gradually marked a division. In 1790, Britain and Spain seemed likely to go to war; then Britain seemed headed for the war with France that finally broke out in 1793. Jefferson argued that Britainââ¬â¢s situation gave the United States an opportunity to secure concessions in return for American neutrality. The Britis h had never evacuated their posts in the Northwest, and westerners suspected the British of sing those bases to provoke Indian attacks on the American frontier. But on April 22, 1793, Washington, influenced by Hamilton, who desperately wanted to avoid any altercation with Britain, issued a proclamation that essentially announced American neutrality without even trying to secure any concessions in return. A few months later, Jefferson submitted his resignation as secretary of state, which took effect at the end of the year. Since the Farewell Address was understood as Washingtonââ¬â¢s parting advice to his country, it was widely read and remains one of the most frequently reprinted documents n American history. It was a moving document, beginning with expressions of the sixty- four-year-old Washingtonââ¬â¢s gratitude to his ââ¬Å"beloved countryâ⬠for the honors and confidence it had invested in him and a reference to ââ¬Å"the increasing weight of yearsâ⬠that admo nished him ââ¬Å"more and more, that the gloom of retirement is as necessary to me as it is welcome. â⬠Then the president offered advice, based on ââ¬Å"much reflection,â⬠that might ââ¬Å"contribute to the permanency of your felicity as a People. â⬠He urged his countrymen to support the public credit, to ââ¬Å"observe good faith and justice towards all Nationsâ⬠while voiding permanent alliances with any, and to disdain ââ¬Å"over-grown Military establishments,â⬠which were always ââ¬Å"inauspicious to liberty. â⬠But the thrust of his message concerned the countryââ¬â¢s political divisions. However, it seems strange in retrospect, that the Adams administration had a president from one party (Federalist) and vice-president from another (Republican). But Adams and Jefferson had been allies in the struggle for independence and, in the 1780ââ¬â¢s, deepened their bonds while serving together as diplomats in Europe. Most important, problems wi th France remained pressing. After hearing about Jayââ¬â¢s Treaty, the French, who began seizing American ships bound for England, would not recognize the neutral rights of American ships and in December 1796 refused to accept the new American minister to France. As the war fever grew, Adams fell into Washingtonââ¬â¢s old position, regarding critics of his government as rebellious people who put their confidence in France rather than their own government. Federalists in Congress went further, passing a series of laws for the suppression of the Republicans. Three Alien Acts, passed in June and July of 798, moved against immigrants, who were often members of the Republican Party. The first, an Alien Enemies Act that allowed the president to arrest or banish enemy aliens, would rake effect only if war was declared. Another Alien Act allowed the president to deport any foreigners he considered dangerous to the public peace and safety, and a Naturalization Act increased the time of residence before immigrants c ould become Citizens, and therefore acquire voting rights. The Alien Act also stated that, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦whenever there shall be a declared war between the United States, by any foreign ation or government, or any invasion or predatory incursion shall be perpetrated, attempted, or threatened against the territory of the United States, by any foreign government, and the President of the United States shall make public proclamation of the eventâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (Document E). As Americaââ¬â¢s population grew and increasing numbers of white settlers looked westward for affordable land, events were unfolding that would dramatically change the map of America and influence the nationââ¬â¢s political, economic, and social development for much of the nineteenth century. At issue was the so-called Louisiana Territory, an enormous area that stretched from the Mississippi River in the East to the Rocky Mountains in the West and north to Canada. Like most Americans, Jefferson harbored the belief that Louisiana would some day belong to the United States. It was thought that control of Louisiana, long considered a natural extension of the United States, loomed critical in defending the countryââ¬â¢s expanding frontier against Indian raids and foreign adventurers as well as serving as a valuable source of raw materials, most notable the worthwhile western fur trade. Most important, in Jeffersonââ¬â¢s view, the Louisiana Territory would be Americaââ¬â¢s ultimate safety valve: a seemingly limitless territory to which Indians could be removed ahead of white settlement and, above all, a place where landless immigrants from the East might move to carry on the American tradition that he deemed so essential to the well-being of the Republic. The Louisiana Purchase Treaty, also came out of this purchase. Which was a positive boost to the relationship between the United States and France, because as stated, ââ¬Å" The First Consul of the French Republic desiring to give to the United a strong proof of his friendship doth hereby cede to the United States in the name of the French Republicâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (Document F). Altogether, a new American nation emerged solely on these incidences in history. They helped pave the way for future and current political parties, and influenced their beliefs in domestic and foreign issues. Though these perspectives are represented on a wide scale, they are related in that all Americans seek perfection whether it is concerning domestic and foreign policies, and how that relation is always connected to our supreme United States Constitution.

Teenagers Represented In The Media
Teenagers used to be the forgotten group in society. The ones who are stuck between being ââ¬Å"cute kidsâ⬠and ââ¬Å"responsible adults.â⬠But all that's been changing over the last twenty years or so, as the media realizes that teens are slowly getting a voice in society, but are these changes good or bad? The media represents teenagers in a very conventional way, stereotyped by their appearance, sex, and personality. Different varieties of media are meant to do different things. Some of the media's many roles are to display the truth, make the viewer aware and to entertain. Most of the media presents an inaccurate and negative portrayal of adolescents today according to their appearance, sex, personality and age, among other things. Most teenagers in the media are represented as attractive, confident and white, which may make teenagers feel pressurised to fit in with the medias representation of them and so if they don't fit these categories making them uncomfortable with their own bodies. I think the media should have a wider variety of races, looks and personalities to show teenagers they don't have to have fit in with the typical image of them as shown in the media. The media highlights the exciting events in teenagers lives, e.g dancing at parties, getting drunk, spending money and generally having a good time, but they don't always show the more depressing parts of teenagers lives such as bullying, exams, insecurities etc, which seems more important There are many TV programmes today that focus on wealthy, glamorous lifestyles of teenagers that come form extremely privileged backgrounds, many people enjoy these programmes as it gives them a chance to escape from the reality of their own lives and see it from other peoples. Although some other programmes look at the more realistic lifestyles, where teenagers have to work hard and don't just have everything handed to them on a plate, many people watch these as they can relate to them and understand where characters are coming from. Although in all these lifestyles the teenage characters do go through many dramatic, emotional experiences and events. A lot of the media shows teenagers partying every night, always out and getting up to mischief e.g. taking drugs, having fights etc. In Skins, a teenage drama, a character called Effy sneaks out her house in the middle of the night, burns a bus, goes out to a deserted warehouse, where she takes various drugs with boys and finally ends up in a party at a random person's house where she collapse from a drug overdose. Later her brother finds her, she is then rushed to hospital and ends up moving school; this all happens in the space of a few days. In reality most teenagers' lives are a lot more boring, dull and uneventful, for example they generally spend most of their time studying, using the Internet at home and watching TV etc. Often their characters are exaggerated as well as events and situations. In a lot of teenage dramas the characters are unrealistic for example in the TV series Eastenders there is a teenage boy, Stephen, who is evil and manipulative, he turns his own sister against their family, while everyone thinks he is kind and good, in real life teenagers are not like this, they aren't as controlling or manipulative. Although teenagers are represented positively in many parts of the media, programmes such as the OC show characters like Marissa and Ryan acting kindly and maturely e.g. when Marissa sees a man being mugged, she comes to help him and calls the police this shows she is caring and responsible, which is a positive image of teenagers in the media. In conclusion Teenagers in the media are shown in lots of different ways, often as being a problem to society e.g. controlling, rude and disrespectful, this is shown in soaps, dramas, movies and news, it gives out a very negative image on teenagers, which isn't always fair. Teenagers can be represented positively, helping the community and being polite and social although this is not usually the case. Mainly teenagers are shown in a negative way and their characters and dilemmas are not realistic.

Chapter 15 The Quidditch Final
ââ¬Å"He sent me this,â⬠Hermione said, holding out the letter. Harry took it. The parchment was damp, and enormous teardrops had smudged the ink so badly in places that it was very difficult to read. Dear Hermione, We lost. I'm allowed to bring him back to Hogwarts. Execution date to be fixed. Beaky has enjoyed London. I won't forget all the help you gave us. Hagrid ââ¬Å"They can't do this,â⬠said Harry. ââ¬Å"They can't. Buckbeak isn't dangerous.â⬠ââ¬Å"Malfoy's dad's frightened the Committee into it,â⬠said Hermione, wiping her eyes. ââ¬Å"You know what he's like. They're a bunch of doddery old fools, and they were scared. There'll be an appeal, though, there always is. Only I can't see any hopeâ⬠¦Nothing will have changed.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah, it will,â⬠said Ron fiercely. ââ¬Å"You won't have to do all the work alone this time, Hermione. I'll help.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh, Ron!â⬠Hermione flung her arms around Ron's neck and broke down completely. Ron, looking quite terrified, patted her very awkwardly on the top of the head. Finally, Hermione drew away. ââ¬Å"Ron, I'm really, really sorry about Scabbersâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ she sobbed. ââ¬Å"Oh ââ¬â well ââ¬â he was old,â⬠said Ron, looking thoroughly relieved that she had let go of him. ââ¬Å"And he was a bit useless. You never know, Mum and Dad might get me an owl now.â⬠The safety measures imposed on the students since Black's second break-in made it impossible for Harry, Ron, and Hermione to go and visit Hagrid in the evenings. Their only chance of talking to him was during Care of Magical Creatures lessons. He seemed numb with shock at the verdict. ââ¬Å"S'all my fault. Got all tongue-tied. They was all sittin' there in black robes an' I kep' droppin' me notes and forgettin' all them dates yeh looked up fer me, Hermione. An' then Lucius Malfoy stood up an' said his bit, and the Committee jus' did exac'ly what he told 'emâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ââ¬Å"There's still the appeal!â⬠said Ron fiercely. ââ¬Å"Don't give up yet, we're working on it!â⬠They were walking back up to the castle with the rest of the class. Ahead they could see Malfoy, who was walking with Crabbe and Goyle, and kept looking back, laughing derisively. ââ¬Å"S'no good, Ron,â⬠said Hagrid sadly as they reached the castle steps. ââ¬Å"That Committee's in Lucius Malfoy's pocket. I'm jus' gonna make sure the rest o' Beaky's time is the happiest he's ever had. I owe him thatâ⬠¦.â⬠Hagrid turned around and hurried back toward his cabin, his face buried in his handkerchief. ââ¬Å"Look at him blubber!â⬠Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle had been standing just inside the castle doors, listening. ââ¬Å"Have you ever seen anything quite as pathetic?â⬠said Malfoy. ââ¬Å"And he's supposed to be our teacher!â⬠Harry and Ron both made furious moves toward Malfoy, but Hermione got there first ââ¬â SMACK! She had slapped Malfoy across the face with all the strength she could muster. Malfoy staggered. Harry, Ron, Crabbe, and Goyle stood flabbergasted as Hermione raised her hand again. ââ¬Å"Don't you dare call Hagrid pathetic, you foul ââ¬â you evil ââ¬âââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Hermione!â⬠said Ron weakly, and he tried to grab her hand as she swung it back. ââ¬Å"Get off, Ron!â⬠Hermione pulled out her wand. Malfoy stepped backward. Crabbe and Goyle looked at him for instructions, thoroughly bewildered. ââ¬Å"C'mon.â⬠Malfoy muttered, and in a moment, all three of them had disappeared into the passageway to the dungeons. ââ¬Å"Hermione!â⬠Ron said again, sounding both stunned and impressed. ââ¬Å"Harry, you'd better beat him in the Quidditch final!â⬠Hermione said shrilly. ââ¬Å"You just better had, because I can't stand it if Slytherin wins!â⬠ââ¬Å"We're due in Charms,â⬠said Ron, still goggling at Hermione. ââ¬Å"We'd better go.â⬠They hurried up the marble staircase toward Professor Flitwick's classroom. ââ¬Å"You're late, boys!â⬠said Professor Flitwick reprovingly as Harry opened the classroom door. ââ¬Å"Come along, quickly, wands out, we're experimenting with Cheering Charms today, we've already divided into pairs ââ¬âââ¬Å" Harry and Ron hurried to a desk at the back and opened their bags. Ron looked behind him. ââ¬Å"Where's Hermione gone?â⬠Harry looked around too. Hermione hadn't entered the classroom, yet Harry knew she had been right next to him when he had opened the door. ââ¬Å"That's weird,â⬠said Harry, staring at Ron. ââ¬Å"Maybe ââ¬â maybe she went to the bathroom or something?â⬠But Hermione didn't turn up all lesson. ââ¬Å"She could've done with a Cheering Charm on her too,â⬠said Ron as the class left for lunch, all grinning broadly ââ¬â the Cheering Charms had left them with a feeling of great contentment. Hermione wasn't at lunch either. By the time they had finished their apple pie, the after-effects of the Cheering Charms were wearing off, and Harry and Ron had started to get slightly worried. ââ¬Å"You don't think Malfoy did something to her?â⬠Ron said anxiously as they hurried upstairs toward Gryffindor Tower. They passed the security trolls, gave the Fat Lady the password (ââ¬Å"Flibbertigibbetâ⬠), and scrambled through the portrait hole into the common room. Hermione was sitting at a table, fast asleep, her head resting on an open Arithmancy book. They went to sit down on either side of her. Harry prodded her awake. ââ¬Å"Wh ââ¬â what?â⬠said Hermione, waking with a start and staring wildly around. ââ¬Å"Is it time to go? W ââ¬â which lesson have we got now?â⬠ââ¬Å"Divination, but it's not for another twenty minutes,â⬠said Harry. ââ¬Å"Hermione, why didn't you come to Charms?â⬠ââ¬Å"What? Oh no!â⬠Hermione squeaked. ââ¬Å"I forgot to go to Charms!â⬠ââ¬Å"But how could you forget?â⬠said Harry. ââ¬Å"You were with us till we were right outside the classroom!â⬠ââ¬Å"I don't believe it!â⬠Hermione wailed. ââ¬Å"Was Professor Flitwick angry? Oh, it was Malfoy, I was thinking about him and I lost track of things!â⬠ââ¬Å"You know what, Hermione?â⬠said Ron, looking down at the enormous Arithmancy book Hermione had been using as a pillow. ââ¬Å"I reckon you're cracking up. You're trying to do too much.â⬠ââ¬Å"No, I'm not!â⬠said Hermione, brushing her hair out of her eyes and staring hopelessly around for her bag. ââ¬Å"I just made a mistake, that's all! I'd better go and see Professor Flitwick and say sorry â⬠¦ I'll see you in Divination!â⬠Hermione joined them at the foot of the ladder to Professor Trelawney's classroom twenty minutes later, looking extremely harassed. ââ¬Å"I can't believe I missed Cheering Charms! And I bet they come up in our exams; Professor Flitwick hinted they might!â⬠Together they climbed the ladder into the dim, stifling tower room. Glowing on every little table was a crystal ball full of pearly white mist. Harry, Ron, and Hermione sat down together at the same rickety table. ââ¬Å"I thought we weren't starting crystal balls until next term,â⬠Ron muttered, casting a wary eye around for Professor Trelawney, in case she was lurking nearby. ââ¬Å"Don't complain, this means we've finished palmistry,â⬠Harry muttered back. ââ¬Å"I was getting sick of her flinching every time she looked at my hands.â⬠ââ¬Å"Good day to you!â⬠said the familiar, misty voice, and Professor Trelawney made her usual dramatic entrance out of the shadows. Parvati and Lavender quivered with excitement, their faces lit by the milky glow of their crystal ball. ââ¬Å"I have decided to introduce the crystal ball a little earlier than I had planned,â⬠said Professor Trelawney, sitting with her back to the fire and gazing around. ââ¬Å"The fates have informed me that your examination in June will concern the Orb, and I am anxious to give you sufficient practice.â⬠Hermione snorted. ââ¬Å"Well, honestlyâ⬠¦'the fates have informed her'. Who sets the exam? She does! What an amazing prediction!â⬠she said, not troubling to keep her voice low. Harry and Ron choked back laughs. It was hard to tell whether Professor Trelawney had heard them as her face was hidden in shadow. She continued, however, as though she had not. ââ¬Å"Crystal gazing is a particularly refined art,â⬠she said dreamily. ââ¬Å"I do not expect any of you to See when first you peer into the Orb's infinite depths. We shall start by practicing relaxing the conscious mind and external eyes ââ¬ââ⬠Ron began to snigger uncontrollably and had to stuff his fist in his mouth to stifle the noise ââ¬â ââ¬Å"so as to clear the Inner Eye and the superconscious. Perhaps, if we are lucky, some of you will see before the end of the class.â⬠And so they began. Harry, at least, felt extremely foolish, staring blankly at the crystal ball, trying to keep his mind empty when thoughts such as ââ¬Å"this is stupidâ⬠kept drifting across it. It didn't help that Ron kept breaking into silent giggles and Hermione kept tutting. ââ¬Å"Seen anything yet?â⬠Harry asked them after a quarter of an hour's quiet crystal gazing. ââ¬Å"Yeah, there's a burn on this table,â⬠said Ron, pointing. ââ¬Å"Someone's spilled their candle.â⬠ââ¬Å"This is such a waste of time,â⬠Hermione hissed. ââ¬Å"I could be practicing something useful. I could be catching up on Cheering Charms ââ¬âââ¬Å" Professor Trelawney rustled past. ââ¬Å"Would anyone like me to help them interpret the shadowy portents within their Orb?â⬠she murmured over the clinking of her bangles. ââ¬Å"I don't need help,â⬠Ron whispered. ââ¬Å"It's obvious what this means. There's going to be loads of fog tonight.â⬠Both Harry and Hermione burst out laughing. ââ¬Å"Now, really!â⬠said Professor Trelawney as everyone's heads turned in their direction. Parvati and Lavender were looking scandalized. ââ¬Å"You are disturbing the clairvoyant vibrations!â⬠She approached their table and peered into their crystal ball. Harry felt his heart sinking. He was sure he knew what was coming ââ¬â ââ¬Å"There is something here!â⬠Professor Trelawney whispered, lowering her face to the ball, so that it was reflected twice in her huge glasses. ââ¬Å"Something movingâ⬠¦ but what is it?â⬠Harry was prepared to bet everything he owned, Including his Firebolt, that it wasn't good news, whatever it was. And sure enough ââ¬â ââ¬Å"My dear,â⬠Professor Trelawney breathed, gazing up at Harry. ââ¬Å"It is here, plainer than ever beforeâ⬠¦ my dear, stalking toward you, growing ever closerâ⬠¦ the Gr ââ¬âââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Oh, for goodness' sake!â⬠said Hermione loudly. ââ¬Å"Not that ridiculous Grim again!â⬠Professor Trelawney raised her enormous eyes to Hermione's face. Parvati whispered something to Lavender, and they both glared at Hermione too. Professor Trelawney stood up, surveying Hermione with unmistakable anger. ââ¬Å"I am sorry to say that from the moment you have arrived in this class my dear, it has been apparent that you do not have what the noble art of Divination requires. Indeed, I don't remember ever meeting a student whose mind was so hopelessly mundane.â⬠There was a moment's silence. Then ââ¬â ââ¬Å"Fine!â⬠said Hermione suddenly, getting up and cramming Unfogging the Future back into her bag. ââ¬Å"Fine!â⬠she repeated, swinging the bag over her shoulder and almost knocking Ron off his chair. ââ¬Å"I give up! I'm leaving!â⬠And to the whole class's amazement, Hermione strode over to the trapdoor, kicked it open, and climbed down the ladder out of sight. It took a few minutes for the class to settle down again. Professor Trelawney seemed to have forgotten all about the Grim. She turned abruptly from Harry and Ron's table, breathing rather heavily as she tugged her gauzy shawl more closely to her. ââ¬Å"Ooooo!â⬠said Lavender suddenly, making everyone start. ââ¬Å"Ooooo, Professor Trelawney, I've just remembered! You saw her leaving, didn't you? Didn't you, Professor? ââ¬ËAround Easter, one of our number will leave us forever!' You said it ages ago, Professor!â⬠Professor Trelawney gave her a dewy smile. ââ¬Å"Yes, my dear, I did indeed know that Miss Granger would be leaving us. One hopes, however, that one might have mistaken the Signsâ⬠¦The Inner Eye can be a burden, you knowâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Lavender and Parvati looked deeply impressed, and moved over so that Professor Trelawney could join their table instead. ââ¬Å"Some day Hermione's having, eh?â⬠Ron muttered to Harry, looking awed. ââ¬Å"Yeahâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Harry glanced into the crystal ball but saw nothing but swirling white mist. Had Professor Trelawney really seen the Grim again? Would he? The last thing he needed was another near-fatal accident, with the Quidditch final drawing ever nearer. The Easter holidays were not exactly relaxing. The third years had never had so much homework. Neville Longbottom seemed close to a nervous collapse, and he wasn't the only one. ââ¬Å"Call this a holiday!â⬠Seamus Finnigan roared at the common room one afternoon. ââ¬Å"The exams are ages away, what're they playing at?â⬠But nobody had as much to do as Hermione. Even without Divination, she was taking more subjects than anybody else. She was usually last to leave the common room at night, first to arrive at the library the next morning; she had shadows like Lupin's under her eyes, and seemed constantly close to tears. Ron had taken over responsibility for Buckbeak's appeal. When he wasn't doing his own work, he was poring over enormously thick volumes with names like The Handbook of Hippogriff Psychology and Fowl or Foul? A Study of Hippogriff Brutality. He was so absorbed, he even forgot to be horrible to Crookshanks. Harry, meanwhile, had to fit in his homework around Quidditch practice every day, not to mention endless discussions of tactics with Wood. The Gryffindor-Slytherin match would take place on the first Saturday after the Easter holidays. Slytherin was leading the tournament by exactly two hundred points. This meant (as Wood constantly reminded his team) that they needed to win the match by more than that amount to win the Cup. It also meant that the burden of winning fell largely on Harry, because capturing the Snitch was worth one hundred and fifty points. ââ¬Å"So you must catch it only if we're more than fifty points up,â⬠Wood told Harry constantly. ââ¬Å"Only if we're more than fifty points up, Harry, or we win the match but lose the Cup. You've got that, Haven't you? You must catch the Snitch only if we're ââ¬âââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"I KNOW, OLIVER!â⬠Harry yelled. The whole of Gryffindor House was obsessed with the coming match. Gryffindor hadn't won the Quidditch Cup since the legendary Charlie Weasley (Ron's second oldest brother) had been Seeker. But Harry doubted whether any of them, even Wood, wanted to win as much as he did. The enmity between Harry and Malfoy was at its highest point ever. Malfoy was still smarting about the mud-throwing incident in Hogsmeade and was even more furious that Harry had somehow wormed his way out of punishment. Harry hadn't forgotten Malfoy's attempt to sabotage him in the match against Ravenclaw, but it was the matter of Buckbeak that made him most determined to beat Malfoy in front of the entire school. Never, in anyone's memory, had a match approached in such a highly charged atmosphere. By the time the holidays were over, tension between the two teams and their Houses was at the breaking point. A number of small scuffles broke out in the corridors, culminating in a nasty incident in which a Gryffindor fourth year and a Slytherin sixth year ended up in the hospital wing with leeks sprouting out of their ears. Harry was having a particularly bad time of it. He couldn't walk to class without Slytherins sticking out their legs and trying to trip him up; Crabbe and Goyle kept popping up wherever he went, and slouching away looking disappointed when they saw him surrounded by people. Wood had given instructions that Harry should be accompanied everywhere he went, in case the Slytherins tried to put him out of action. The whole of Gryffindor House took up the challenge enthusiastically, so that it was impossible for Harry to get to classes on time because he was surrounded by a vast, chattering crowd. Harry was more concerned for his Firebolt's safety than his own. When he wasn't flying it, he locked it securely in his trunk and frequently dashed back up to Gryffindor Tower at break times to check that it was still there. All usual pursuits were abandoned in the Gryffindor common room the night before the match. Even Hermione had put down her books. ââ¬Å"I can't work, I can't concentrate,â⬠she said nervously. There was a great deal of noise. Fred and George Weasley were dealing with the pressure by being louder and more exuberant than ever. Oliver Wood was crouched over a model of a Quidditch field in the corner, prodding little figures across it with his wand and muttering to himself Angelina, Alicia, and Katie were laughing at Fred's and George's jokes. Harry was sitting with Ron and Hermione, removed from the center of things, trying not to think about the next day, because every time he did, he had the horrible sensation that something very large was fighting to get out of his stomach. ââ¬Å"You're going to be fine,â⬠Hermione told him, though she looked positively terrified. ââ¬Å"You've got a Firebolt!â⬠said Ron. ââ¬Å"Yeah â⬠¦Ã¢â¬ said Harry, his stomach writhing. It came as a relief when Wood suddenly stood up and yelled, ââ¬Å"Team! Bed!â⬠Harry slept badly. First he dreamed that he had overslept, and that Wood was yelling, ââ¬Å"Where were you? We had to use Neville instead!â⬠Then he dreamed that Malfoy and the rest of the Slytherin team arrived for the match riding dragons. He was flying at breakneck speed, trying to avoid a spurt of flames from Malfoy's steed's mouth, when he realized he had forgotten his Firebolt. He fell through the air and woke with a start. It was a few seconds before Harry remembered that the match hadn't taken place yet, that he was safe in bed, and that the Slytherin team definitely wouldn't be allowed to play on dragons. He was feeling very thirsty. Quietly as he could, he got out of his four-poster and went to pour himself some water from the silver jug beneath the window. The grounds were still and quiet. No breath of wind disturbed the treetops in the Forbidden Forest; the Whomping Willow was motionless and innocent-looking. It looked as though the conditions for the match would be perfect. Harry set down his goblet and was about to turn back to his bed when something caught his eye. An animal of some kind was prowling across the silvery lawn. Harry dashed to his bedside table, snatched up his glasses, and put them on, then hurried back to the window. It couldn't be the Grim ââ¬â not now ââ¬â not right before the match ââ¬â He peered out at the grounds again and, after a minute's frantic searching, spotted it. It was skirting the edge of the forest nowâ⬠¦It wasn't the Grim at all â⬠¦ it was a cat â⬠¦ Harry clutched the window ledge in relief as he recognized the bottlebrush tail. It was only Crookshanksâ⬠¦ Or was it only Crookshanks? Harry squinted, pressing his nose flat against the glass. Crookshanks seemed to have come to a halt. Harry was sure he could see something else moving in the shadow of the trees too. And just then, it emerged ââ¬â a gigantic, shaggy black dog, moving stealthily across the lawn, Crookshanks trotting at its side. Harry stared. What did this mean? If Crookshanks could see the dog as well, how could it be an omen of Harry's death? ââ¬Å"Ron!â⬠Harry hissed. ââ¬Å"Ron! Wake up!â⬠ââ¬Å"Huh?â⬠ââ¬Å"I need you to tell me if you can see something!â⬠ââ¬Å"S'all dark, Harry,â⬠Ron muttered thickly. ââ¬Å"What're you on about?â⬠ââ¬Å"Down here ââ¬âââ¬Å" Harry looked quickly back out of the window. Crookshanks and the dog had vanished. Harry climbed onto the windowsill to look right down into the shadows of the castle, but they weren't there. Where had they gone? A loud snore told him Ron had fallen asleep again. Harry and the rest of the Gryffindor team entered the Great Hall the next day to enormous applause. Harry couldn't help grinning broadly as he saw that both the Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff tables were applauding them too. The Slytherin table hissed loudly as they passed. Harry noticed that Malfoy looked even paler than usual. Wood spent the whole of breakfast urging his team to eat, while touching nothing himself. Then he hurried them off to the field before anyone else had finished, so they could get an idea of the conditions. As they left the Great Hall, everyone applauded again. ââ¬Å"Good luck, Harry!â⬠called Cho. Harry felt himself blushing. ââ¬Å"Okay ââ¬â no wind to speak of ââ¬â sun's a bit bright, that could impair your vision, watch out for it ââ¬â ground's fairly hard, good, that'll give us a fast kickoff ââ¬âââ¬Å" Wood paced the field, staring around with the team behind him. Finally, they saw the front doors of the castle open in the distance and the rest of the school spilling onto the lawn. ââ¬Å"Locker rooms,â⬠said Wood tersely. None of them spoke as they changed into their scarlet robes. Harry wondered if they were feeling like he was: as though he'd eaten something extremely wriggly for breakfast. In what seemed like no time at all, Wood was saying, ââ¬Å"Okay, it's time, let's go ââ¬âââ¬Å" They walked out onto the field to a tidal wave of noise. Three quarters of the crowd was wearing scarlet rosettes, waving scarlet flags with the Gryffindor lion upon them, or brandishing banners with slogans like ââ¬Å"GO GRYFFINDOR!â⬠and ââ¬Å"LIONS FOR THE CUPâ⬠Behind the Slytherin goal posts, however, two hundred people were wearing green; the silver serpent of Slytherin glittered on their flags, and Professor Snape sat in the very front row, wearing green like everyone else, and a very grim smile. ââ¬Å"And here are the Gryffindors!â⬠yelled Lee Jordan, who was acting as commentator as usual. ââ¬Å"Potter, Bell, Johnson, Spinnet, Weasley, Weasley, and Wood. Widely acknowledged as the best team Hogwarts has seen in a good few years ââ¬âââ¬Å" Lee's comments were drowned by a tide of ââ¬Ëboos' from the Slytherin end. ââ¬Å"And here come the Slytherin team, led by Captain Flint. He's made some changes in the lineup and seems to be going for size rather than skill ââ¬âââ¬Å" More boos from the Slytherin crowd. Harry, however, thought Lee had a point. Malfoy was easily the smallest person On the Slytherin team; the rest of them were enormous. ââ¬Å"Captains, shake hands!â⬠said Madam Hooch. Flint and Wood approached each other and grasped each other's hand very tightly; it looked as though each was trying to break the other's fingers. ââ¬Å"Mount your brooms!â⬠said Madam Hooch. ââ¬Å"Threeâ⬠¦twoâ⬠¦oneâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ The sound of her whistle was lost in the roar from the crowd as fourteen brooms rose into the air. Harry felt his hair fly back off his forehead; his nerves left him in the thrill of the flight; he glanced around, saw Malfoy on his tail, and sped off in search of the Snitch. ââ¬Å"And it's Gryffindor in possession, Alicia Spinner of Gryffindor with the Quaffle, heading straight for the Slytherin goal posts, looking good, Alicia! Argh, no ââ¬â Quaffle intercepted by Warrington, Warrington of Slytherin tearing UP the field ââ¬â WHAM! ââ¬â nice Bludger work there by George Weasley, Warrington drops the Quaffle, it's caught by ââ¬â Johnson, Gryffindor back in possession, come on, Angelina ââ¬â nice swerve around Montague ââ¬â duck, Angelina, that's a Bludger!?C SHE SCORES! TEN-ZERO TO GRYFFINDOR!â⬠Angelina punched the air as she soared around the end of the field; the sea of scarlet below was screaming its delight ââ¬Å"OUCH!â⬠Angelina was nearly thrown from her broom as Marcus Flint went smashing into her. ââ¬Å"Sorry!â⬠said Flint as the crowd below booed. ââ¬Å"Sorry, didn't see her!â⬠A moment later, Fred Weasley chucked his Beater's club at the back of Flint's head. Flint's nose smashed into the handle of his broom and began to bleed. ââ¬Å"That will do!â⬠shrieked Madam Hooch, zooming between then. ââ¬Å"Penalty shot to Gryffindor for an unprovoked attack on their Chaser! Penalty shot to Slytherin for deliberate damage to their Chaser!â⬠ââ¬Å"Come off it, Miss!â⬠howled Fred, but Madam Hooch blew her whistle and Alicia flew forward to take the penalty. ââ¬Å"Come on, Alicia!â⬠yelled Lee into the silence that had descended on the crowd. ââ¬Å"YES! SHE'S BEATEN THE KEEPER! TWENTY-ZERO TO GRYFFINDOR!â⬠Harry turned the Firebolt sharply to watch Flint, still bleeding freely, fly forward to take the Slytherin penalty. Wood was hovering in front of the Gryffindor goal posts, his jaw clenched. ââ¬Å"ââ¬ËCourse, Wood's a superb Keeper!â⬠Lee Jordan told the crowd as Flint waited for Madam Hooch's whistle. ââ¬Å"Superb! Very difficult to pass ââ¬â very difficult indeed ââ¬â YES! I DON'T BELIEVE IT! HE'S SAVED IT!â⬠Relieved, Harry zoomed away, gazing around for the Snitch, but still making sure he caught every word of Lee's commentary. It was essential that he hold Malfoy off the Snitch until Gryffindor was more than fifty points up ââ¬â ââ¬Å"Gryffindor in possession, no, Slytherin in possession ââ¬â no! Gryffindor back in possession and it's Katie Bell, Katie Bell for Gryffindor with the Quaffle, she's streaking up the field ââ¬â THAT WAS DELIBERATE!â⬠Montague, a Slytherin Chaser, had swerved in front of Katie, and instead of seizing the Quaffle had grabbed her head. Katie cart-wheeled in the air, managed to stay on her broom, but dropped the Quaffle. Madam Hooch's whistle rang out again as she soared over to Montague and began shouting at him. A minute later, Katie had put another penalty past the Slytherin Seeker. ââ¬Å"THIRTY-ZERO! TAKE THAT, YOU DIRTY, CHEATING ââ¬âââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Jordan, if you can't commentate in an unbiased way ââ¬âââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"I'm telling it like it is, Professor!â⬠Harry felt a huge jolt of excitement. He had seen the Snitch ââ¬â it was shimmering at the foot of one of the Gryffindor goal posts ââ¬â but he mustn't catch it yet ââ¬â and if Malfoy saw it ââ¬â Faking a look of sudden concentration, Harry pulled his Firebolt around and sped off toward the Slytherin end ââ¬â it worked. Malfoy went haring after him, clearly thinking Harry had seen the Snitch thereâ⬠¦ WHOOSH. One of the Bludgers came streaking past Harry's right ear, hit by the gigantic Slytherin Beater, Derrick. Then againâ⬠¦ WHOOSH. The second Bludger grazed Harry's elbow. The other Beater, Bole, was closing in. Harry had a fleeting glimpse of Bole and Derrick zooming toward him, clubs raised ââ¬â He turned the Firebolt upward at the last second, and Bole and Derrick collided with a sickening crunch. ââ¬Å"Ha haaa!â⬠yelled Lee Jordan as the Slytherin Beaters lurched away from each other, clutching their heads. ââ¬Å"Too bad, boys! You'll need to get up earlier than that to beat a Firebolt! And it's Gryffindor in possession again, as Johnson takes the Quaffle ââ¬â Flint alongside her ââ¬â poke him in the eye, Angelina! ââ¬â it was a joke, Professor, it was a joke ââ¬â oh no ââ¬â Flint in possession, Flint flying toward the Gryffindor goal posts, come on now, Wood, save ââ¬â!â⬠But Flint had scored; there was an eruption of cheers from the Slytherin end, and Lee swore so badly that Professor McGonagall tried to tug the magical megaphone away from him. ââ¬Å"Sorry, Professor, sorry! Won't happen again! So, Gryffindor in the lead, thirty points to ten, and Gryffindor in possession ââ¬âââ¬Å" It was turning into the dirtiest game Harry had ever played in. Enraged that Gryffindor had taken such an early lead, the Slytherins were rapidly resorting to any means to take the Quaffle. Bole hit Alicia with his club and tried to say he'd thought she was a Bludger. George Weasley elbowed Bole in the face in retaliation. Madam Hooch awarded both teams penalties, and Wood pulled off another spectacular save, making the score forty-ten to Gryffindor. The Snitch had disappeared again. Malfoy was still keeping close to Harry as he soared over the match, looking around for it once Gryffindor was fifty points ahead ââ¬â Katie scored. Fifty-ten. Fred and George Weasley were swooping around her, clubs raised, in case any of the Slytherins were thinking of revenge. Bole and Derrick took advantage of Fred's and George's absence to aim both Bludgers at Wood; they caught him in the stomach, one after the other, and he rolled over in the air, clutching his broom, completely winded. Madam Hooch was beside herself ââ¬â ââ¬Å"YOU DO NOT ATTACK THE KEEPER UNLESS THE QUAFFLE IS WITHIN THE SCORING AREA!â⬠she shrieked at Bole and Derrick. ââ¬Å"Gryffindor penalty!â⬠And Angelina scored. Sixty-ten. Moments later, Fred Weasley pelted a Bludger at Warrington, knocking the Quaffle out of his hands; Alicia seized it and put it through the Slytherin goal ââ¬â seventy-ten. The Gryffindor crowd below was screaming itself hoarse ââ¬â Gryffindor was sixty points in the lead, and if Harry caught the Snitch now, the Cup was theirs. Harry could almost feel hundreds of eyes following him as he soared around the field, high above the rest of the game, with Malfoy speeding along behind him. And then he saw it. The Snitch was sparkling twenty feet above him. Harry put on a huge burst of speed; the wind was roaring in his ears; he stretched out his hand, but suddenly, the Firebolt was slowing down ââ¬â Horrified, he looked around. Malfoy had thrown himself forward, grabbed hold of the Firebolt's tail, and was pulling it back. ââ¬Å"You ââ¬âââ¬Å" Harry was angry enough to hit Malfoy, but couldn't reach ââ¬â Malfoy was panting with the effort of holding onto the Firebolt, but his eyes were sparkling maliciously. He had achieved what he'd wanted to do ââ¬â the Snitch had disappeared again. ââ¬Å"Penalty! Penalty to Gryffindor! I've never seen such tactics.â⬠Madam Hooch screeched, shooting up to where Malfoy was sliding back onto his Nimbus Two Thousand and One. ââ¬Å"YOU CHEATING SCUM!â⬠Lee Jordan was howling into the megaphone, dancing out of Professor McGonagall's reach. ââ¬Å"YOU FILTHY, CHEATING B ââ¬âââ¬Å" Professor McGonagall didn't even bother to tell him off She was actually shaking her finger in Malfoy's direction, her hat had fallen off, and she too was shouting furiously. Alicia took Gryffindor's penalty, but she was so angry she missed by several feet. The Gryffindor team was losing concentration and the Slytherins, delighted by Malfoy's foul on Harry, were being spurred on to greater heights. ââ¬Å"Slytherin in possession, Slytherin heading for goal ââ¬â Montague scores ââ¬ââ⬠Lee groaned. ââ¬Å"Seventy-twenty to Gryffindorâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Harry was now marking Malfoy so closely their knees kept hitting each other. Harry wasn't going to let Malfoy anywhere near the Snitchâ⬠¦. ââ¬Å"Get out of it, Potter!â⬠Malfoy yelled in frustration as he tried to turn and found Harry blocking him. ââ¬Å"Angelina Johnson gets the Quaffle for Gryffindor, come on, Angelina, COME ON!â⬠Harry looked around. Every single Slytherin player apart from Malfoy was streaking up the pitch toward Angelina, including the Slytherin Keeper ââ¬â they were all going to block her ââ¬â Harry wheeled the Firebolt around, bent so low he was lying flat along the handle, and kicked it forward. Like a bullet, he shot toward the Slytherins. ââ¬Å"AAAAAAARRRGH!â⬠They scattered as the Firebolt zoomed toward them; Angelina's way was clear. ââ¬Å"SHE SCORES! SHE SCORES! Gryffindor leads by eighty Points to twenty!â⬠Harry, who had almost pelted headlong into the stands, skidded to a halt in midair, reversed, and zoomed back into the middle of the field. And then he saw something to make his heart stand still. Malfoy was diving, a look of triumph on his face ââ¬â there, a few feet above the grass below, was a tiny, golden glimmer ââ¬â Harry urged the Firebolt downward, but Malfoy was miles ahead ââ¬â ââ¬Å"Go! Go! Go!â⬠Harry urged his broom. He was gaining on Malfoy ââ¬â Harry flattened himself to the broom handle as Bole sent a Bludger at him ââ¬â he was at Malfoy's ankles ââ¬â he was level ââ¬â Harry threw himself forward, took both hands off his broom. He knocked Malfoy's arm out of the way and ââ¬â ââ¬Å"YES!â⬠He pulled out of his dive, his hand in the air, and the stadium exploded. Harry soared above the crowd, an odd ringing in his ears. The tiny golden ball was held tight in his fist, beating its wings hopelessly against his fingers. Then Wood was speeding toward him, half-blinded by tears; he seized Harry around the neck and sobbed unrestrainedly into his shoulder. Harry felt two large thumps as Fred and George hit them; then Angelina's, Alicia's, and Katie's voices, ââ¬Å"We've won the Cup! We've won the Cup!â⬠Tangled together in a many-armed hug, the Gryffindor team sank, yelling hoarsely, back to earth. Wave upon wave of crimson supporters was pouring over the barriers onto the field. Hands were raining down on their backs. Harry had a confused impression of noise and bodies pressing in on him. Then he, and the rest of the team, were hoisted onto the shoulders of the crowd. Thrust into the light, he saw Hagrid, Plastered with crimson rosettes ââ¬â ââ¬Å"Yeh beat 'em, Harry, yeh beat 'em! Wait till I tell Buckbeak!â⬠There was Percy, jumping up and down like a maniac, all dignity forgotten. Professor McGonagall was sobbing harder even than Wood, wiping her eyes with an enormous Gryffindor flag; and there, fighting their way toward Harry, were Ron and Hermione. Words failed them. They simply beamed as Harry was borne toward the stands, where Dumbledore stood waiting with the enormous Quidditch Cup. If only there had been a Dementor aroundâ⬠¦As a sobbing Wood passed Harry the Cup, as he lifted it into the air, Harry felt he could have produced the world's best Patronus.
